Covering Use Cases around Context
There are multiple ISV’s that are developing Context engines based on the JEE platform today, such as Appear. Since my next book is on “Identity and Context”, after my prior entries here and here I thought through and compiled all the relevant materials for the 7 chapters (along with my coauthors); This includes material for the Introduction chapter - that talks to the Mobility Context (mobility is the basis for all other context areas), and the 5 major areas of context, 1 chapter per area of context - 5 core chapters with one use case each, and a conclusion chapter that discusses ONE implementation of a macro use case given the technologies and tools we have today. There will be one use case that is;UC# 1: task, role and enterprise network oriented (such as mortgage underwriter or a legal attorney specializing in one area)UC# 2: connection, persona and social network oriented (such as Disney fan, with friend and family at orlando)UC# 3: profile, preference and personal network oriented (such as preferred color, tilt dimension, preferred radio station on a smart car)UC# 4: location, presence, time and NG network oriented (such as location, time, calendar and contact book based direction services)UC# 5: smart home, smart retail, smart car and sensor network oriented (sprinkler system calling repair services when owner is on vacation or a building security system)All 5 use cases will exemplify the value proposition of the “identity and policy” layer in the network for -privacy, QOE, consent, control and more.. that allows for the contextual composition. The conclusion chapter will talk to ONE Use Case Implementation that leverages OSGi, SIP Application Server from Sun (that supports OSGi), XDI, OpenSSO, JCAPS and more.. A macro use case that touches all 5 areas. If interested in this area read through this 3 part article and take this AM/WebService class. The one use case that I’ve been talking about for 7+ years now (since I work with wireless companies and I travel a lot) is the Get Directions Use case (UC #4). We are used to GPS systems in our cars, and I used to wonder what if I could get the directions in my mobile, based on the current time, the calendar event for that time, destination address from the contact book, and current location from the network. Without me having to plug in the origination or destination address I will get the directions to the place that I am heading all the time (of course only works for a well organized person).Today we have everything in place to deliver such use cases to our customers and you will see such services soon. The location services is already there, the GPS services is there, you have contact list in your device, and the events in your calendar as well (see Liberty specs on multi-device SSO), we only need tools like OpenSSO and JCAPS to compose these contextual services based on what the USERS need.Such Contextual Composition of Converged Services can be in the millions and the TRUE value of an Identity System in the Network is derived only when we go beyond, Federated Identity and Federated Policy to deliver Federated Context. 1st draft of the 3rd book will be done dec 31st 2008.
